Jim Cleary: Where does state GOP stand?

I thought most of our state legislators were Republicans, supposedly believing local government control is best. Why, then, do legislators want to take tax dollars away from counties and steer them to the state, in the name of tax cuts?

As an example, consider the proposal to replace sales taxes on new vehicle sales with a $2,000 "fee" that would go to the state. Don't our lawmakers realize that many taxpayers know what they're doing? How much, if any, of the money from that fee will ever get back to county governments?

Most Republicans also believe in free enterprise. Why, then, would they allow Georgia Power to start charging customers for construction of a nuclear plant that won't come online for years? Isn't is "socialism" when government gets into business? It would be interesting to see how much Georgia Power money goes to state legislators.
